Matthew Barcus, PhD

Matthew Barcus, PhD, has been the visionary president of the SF Go Club since 2022, with a strong focus on fostering social camaraderie among its members. As an analyst in the financial industry, specializing in the biotech sector, he brings a unique perspective to the club. With his postdoctoral training at the University of Tokyo and PhD from Cornell University, Matt's expertise adds depth to the club's activities. Fluent in Mandarin, he ensures effective communication and inclusivity within a diverse community. Apart from his love for Go, Matt finds joy in sailing on the stunning SF Bay, further promoting the club's vision of building lasting connections and creating a vibrant social environment for all members.

Ernest Brown, PhD

Ernest Brown, PhD, has been a cherished member of the SF Go Club since 1975, making invaluable contributions throughout the years. A former President of the club and Vice-President of the AGA (American Go Association), his expertise in Go is widely respected. In 1996, he completed a psychology dissertation titled "The Efficacy of using the board game Goe to understand patterns of East-Asian thinking," showcasing his academic prowess. Dr. Brown is an authorized teacher of Yang Yu Chia's Scientific Method of teaching Go and has served on the boards of organizations including the American Ing Goe, San Francisco Zen Center, New College of California, MAAT, and the San Francisco Go Club.

Paul Goodman

Originally from New York, I came to San Francisco in 1972 and I have been a member of the SF Go Club since 1973. I taught physics and mathematics for 33 years at Skyline College, in San Bruno. On a good day I currently play Go at the level of 2D. I enjoy teaching beginners and kyu players, so don’t hesitate to ask for a game if you catch me at the club.
