Welcome to the Oldest Go Club in North America
What is Go?
Go is the world's oldest continuously-played board game, which, since its invention in east Asia between two and four thousand years ago, has been a symbol of deep intellectual pursuit throughout the world.
The rules are simple, with players taking turns placing stones on the board, each attempting to encircle territory to secure points. But from its deceptively simple premise arises an unimaginably deep game of strategy.

About Our Club
The San Francisco Go Club was founded in the 1930s, making it the oldest Go club in North America. We are a community of enthusiasts who love to explore this beautiful game, improve our skills, and share Go with new players throughout the Bay Area.
Our activities include providing a regular space for players to meet and play, teaching newcomers curious about the game, hosting monthly tournaments, guest lectures from top professionals, and even providing a venue for major national tournaments such as the North American Pro Qualifiers.
Our strong, active player base and top rate facilities and equipment make us one of the premier Go organizations in the country.

How do I get started?
Our members are always happy to teach newcomers. We gather in our club space in the Japan Town Mall every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We welcome walk-ins and are happy to share more about the game or offer a tour of the club space.
If you already know the rules but are thinking of sharpening your skills, consider signing up for our Tuesday night beginner study sessions.
